What Classes Should Engineers Have to Take in Order to Succeed in Life?
Engineering is fun when you understand what you are doing.
Engineers around the world are known to take many different classes that revolve around the world of STEM. As an engineer, my classes are a little more difficult than the average student's schedule. Some classes that an engineer have to take when transferring to NC State University are coding, intro to computing, humanities like ethics, math, physics, etc.
Normal students are lucky that they don't have to take these different types due to the fact that the amount of stress that this causes students is crazy.
Some classes that I have taken to get into state include Coding, intro to computing, English, ethics, economics, pre-calc, calculus 1, chemistry, and intro into engineering. I am going to explain why I think these classes are useful and what I like and don't like about them.
Coding
I am taking coding this semester and it is a pain in the butt if you get behind. I enjoy this class when the code is able to work but trying to figure out how each part plays in making the code.
This class is very useful when you are trying to program something to work like a pacemaker or make a tesla not have any bugs. Some types of engineering deals with robotics so being able to code is very important.
If we think about it, the world runs on cod from building buildings to relaxing on the couch watching TV. TV’s need lots of coding due to the fact that the remote has to send signals to the receptor in the TV to be able to change the channels.
Intro to Computing
In all honesty I have no idea what this class is about. We do many different things like build spreadsheets in Excel, make websites like we are doing this week, and just practice using things that we may use in the work field. This class is pretty laid back if you do the work.
The pro of this class is that you are able to see what types of programs that you will have to deal with in the workplace.
The cons are just how long the independent assignments take you. Some independent assignments took me until almost 1 am to complete while others I could do in 10 minutes.
Math
Math is fun when you understand what you are doing. I am taking calculus 1 this semester and its super fun and the teacher is amazing.
The pro of this class is that you are able to solve problems and come up with decisions. When you are able to solve problems, you are able to identify the pattern and apply it to other problem in the future.
The cons are that some problems take time, and you have to remember the formula for each type of problem.
Physics
I haven’t taken physics yet, but I know that the stuff they do in there is crazy. People have always told me not to do physics and math at the same time.
The pro of this class is that it can lead to most advances in the world. Just like math, it is a good way to problem solve issues that you could be having in the world.
Some cons that I can think of is remembering how to do each problem. Some of my friends are in physics and their work looks so difficult.
Chemistry
I absolutely loved chemistry due to the fact that I was able to mix chemicals and create cool things. My chem class was absolutely amazing. I learned so many cool things like what chemicals that we can mix and not mix.
The pro of this class is that if you are going into a biomedical field, then they will need this class in order to get into the field.
The cons are that if you are not going into a field that needs chemistry, did you take the class for nothing? When I was in high school, I wanted to become a surgeon, so I started taking classes for it. I took chemistry but when I decided to do engineering, I realized that I didn’t need it.
In conclusion…
I really enjoy taking these classes and I really think they will help me in the future! Some people might think that these classes are not important but just remember, these classes are your future.
I love how focused you are on a specific audience. I'm anxious to see what other tips you might have for new Engineering students. For example, is there something that you've found difficult that surprised you?
